Million Pieces by Newsboys is a catchy tune that draws you in with its guitar riffs and light feel. More than a puff piece though, the song touches on a profound truth, by casting your cares to God, you become more effective and useful in his Kingdom.

This is not your floor You’re going higher than before

They all fall Like a million raindrops Falling from a blue sky Kissing your cares goodbye They all fall Like a million pieces A tickertape parade high And now you’re free to fly Carryin’ a millstone malaise It’s been pulling down your gaze You pound the pavement It don’t give or care This weight ain’t yours to bear Why you holdin’ grudges in old jars? Why you wanna show off all your scars? What’s it gonna take to lay a few burdens down? It’s a beautiful sound When they all fall Like a million raindrops Falling from a blue sky Kissing your cares goodbye They all fall Like a million pieces A ticker tape parade high And now you’re free to fly When that muffled sigh Says you’re barely getting by Cut your burdens loose and just simplify Simplify This is not your floor You’re going higher than before Drop the weight now Wait for the lookout guide Look outside As they all fall Like a million raindrops Falling from a blue sky Kissing your cares goodbye They all fall Like a million pieces A ticker tape parade high Now you’re free to fly You’ve gotta lay that burden down You’re gonna lay that burden down It’s time to leave your burdens in a pyre Set a bonfire ‘Cause when you lay your burdens down When you lay your burdens down When you drop them burdens What a free-fall What a thrill Bury them all In a landfill

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more,
But the Master of the sea, heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.

Refrain

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me!

All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I’ll cling
In His blessèd presence live, ever His praises sing,
Love so mighty and so true, merits my soul’s best songs,
Faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.

Refrain

Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves,
He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves.
He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey,
He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.

Woke up this morning with this song in my head. It sure beats waking up with the Ford Jingle being sung by the American Idol guy..

We have heard the joyful sound:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land,
Climb the mountains, cross the waves;
Onward! ’tis our Lord’s command;
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Sing above the battle strife:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
By His death and endless life
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout it brightly through the gloom
when the heart for mercy craves;
Sing in triumph o’er the tomb:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Give the winds a mighty voice:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Let the nations now rejoice:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout salvation full and free;
Highest hills and deepest caves;
This our song of victory:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

My english skills were always weak. Diagramming sentences was about as much fun as visiting the dentist. Adjectives though, were a treat. Super, Fantastic, Strong, Magnificent are just a few adjectives that describe God. Awesome, that one works very well too..

When He rolls up His sleeves
He ain’t just putting on the ritz
(Our God is an awesome God)
There’s thunder in His footsteps
And lightning in His fists
(Our God is an awesome God)
And the Lord wasn’t joking
When He kicked ’em out of Eden
It wasn’t for no reason
That He shed His blood
His return is very close
And so you better be believing that
Our God is an awesome God

Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God

Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God

And when the sky was starless
In the void of the night
(Our God is an awesome God)
He spoke into the darkness
And created the light
(Our God is an awesome God)
Judgement and wrath He poured out on Sodom
Mercy and grace He gave us at the cross
I hope that we have not
Too quickly forgotten that
Our God is an awesome God

Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God

Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God

I have always enjoyed the hymn What a Friend we Have in Jesus. In times of trouble the song is comforting. In times of Joy, the song is confirmation of how God holds us in his arms.

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he’ll take and shield thee;
thou wilt find a solace there.

One of the things about our memories, and about the way we catalog objects, is the context in which we first experienced something. How many times have you looked at someone and thought – “I don’t like him or her”, only to later see this person in a different setting and change your mind. This happens frequently with actors. We see them in a role, and assume that they are that person.

Sunday morning in church we had a soloist sing the wonderful song “Come to Jesus”. He sang well, and the musical accompaniment was fine, but it just didn’t move me. The reason, I guessed was the context.

The first time I heard the song was in a small country church. It was played simply on a piano, and the words just rose to my ears. And like a newborn baby, don’t be afraid to crawl, And remember when you walk, sometimes we fall…so, Fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus,Fall on Jesus and live.

I hope the words rise to your ears, and provide encouragement, joy, and peace going forward to you.

Weak and wounded sinner, lost and left to die
Raise your head for love is passing by
Come to Jesus, come to Jesus
Come to Jesus and live

Now your burden’s lifted, and carried far away
And precious blood has washed away the stain
Sing to Jesus, sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus and live

And like a newborn baby, don’t be afraid to crawl
And remember when you walk sometimes we fall…so
Fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus and live

Sometimes the way is lonely, and steep and filled with pain
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain…then
Cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus and live

O, and when the love spills over, and music fills the night
And when you can’t contain your joy inside…then
Dance for Jesus, dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus and live

And with your final heartbeat, kiss the world goodbye
Then go in peace and laugh on glory’s side…and
Fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus and live (repeat)

Going out of town tomorrow, and wanted to share a Friday tune. Faithfulness is a topic that I have trouble with from time to time. The music group 4Him had a song several years ago called “Where There is Faith”. This song has brought me encouragement from time to time, and I hope it will do the same for you..

I believe in faithfulness
I believe in giving to myself for someone else
I believe in peace and love
I believe in honesty and trust but it’s not enough
For all that I believe may never change the way it is
Unless I believe Jesus lives

Where there is faith
There is a calling, keep walking
You’re not alone in this world
Where there is faith
There is a peace like a child sleeping
Hope everlasting in He who is able to
Bear every Burden, to heal every hurt in my heart
It is a wonderful, powerful place
Where there is faith

There’s a man across the sea
Never heard the sound of freedom ring
Only in his dreams
There’s a lady dressed in black
In a motorcade of cadillacs
Daddy’s not coming back
Our hearts begin to fall
And our stability grows weak
But Jesus meets our needs if only we believe

Where there is faith
There is a calling, keep walking
You’re not alone in this world
Where there is faith
There is a peace like a child sleeping
Hope everlasting in He who is able to
Bear every Burden, to heal every hurt in my heart
It is a wonderful, powerful place
Where there is faith

I stayed up late last night working on a project and was surprised when I woke up at 5:20 for my devotional (after only about 4 hours of sleep). As I slid the Bible open, it fell to Psalms 112. Songs of praise flowed for the next chapters. It would only be fitting to offer a praise hymn then as the Friday tune.

This has been a great week for me personally. For many around me though, this has been a tough week, and I offer prayers that you have found joy in the passing of this week, and that you have reason for praise.

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Sing, O Earth, His wonderful love proclaim!
Hail Him! hail Him! highest archangels in glory;
Strength and honor give to His holy Name!
Like a shepherd, Jesus will guard His children,
In His arms He carries them all day long:

Praise Him! Praise Him!
Tell of His excellent greatness.
Praise Him! Praise Him!
Ever in joyful song!

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
For our sins He suffered, and bled, and died.
He our Rock, our hope of eternal salvation,
Hail Him! hail Him! Jesus the Crucified.
Sound His praises! Jesus who bore our sorrows,
Love unbounded, wonderful, deep and strong.

Praise Him! Praise Him!
Tell of His excellent greatness.
Praise Him! Praise Him!
Ever in joyful song!

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Heav’nly portals loud with hosannas ring!
Jesus, Savior, reigneth forever and ever.
Crown Him! Crown Him! Prophet, and Priest, and King!
Christ is coming! over the world victorious,
Pow’r and glory unto the Lord belong.

Praise Him! Praise Him!
Tell of His excellent greatness.
Praise Him! Praise Him!
Ever in joyful song!

Spent this morning watching Thomas sing in the play at school. Thomas “introduced” Ed Sullivan, who introduced the Beatles. What a blast the kids had in pretending to be everyone from Elvis (Thank Ya, uh Thank ya very much) to the Supremes, with James Brown thrown in for good measure.

Whether your taste runs from DC Talk, to 4 Him, to Sandi Patti, to The Gaithers, this weeks Friday tune is one that you enjoy. And after watching his angels sing, what more is there to say; God, How Great Thou Art.

O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

The Friday tune this week is one of my favorites, and it speaks directly to the heart of Giving Your all For God. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is a hymn that often gets pulled out towards Easter. Is there a song that is as visually rich with pain than this?

See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down!

His dying crimson, like a robe, Spreads o’er His body on the tree;

For the redeemed the song is also one of the most incredible love songs ever written, for it has as its source the greatest love story ever told.

Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

As all good music, as well as art it leaves us challenged:

Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

What an incredible song. The perfect melody to complement such a sad, triumphant, loving song.

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

His dying crimson, like a robe,
Spreads o’er His body on the tree;
Then I am dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Well, the Friday Tunes this week will actually come out on Sunday due to a busy workload. As it turns out, I attended a funeral on Saturday, and the friday tune comes from the service. Precious Memories, became a fitting tribute to the life of a beloved cousin, and more importantly a trip to the old home place, where my mothers family was from.

Precious memories, unseen angels
Sent from somewhere to my soul
How they linger ever near me
And the sacred scenes unfold
Precious father, loving mother
Fly across the lonely years
And those old home scenes of my childhood
In fond memory appear

Precious memories
How they linger
How they ever flood my soul
Then, the stillness of the midnight
Precious sacred scenes unfold

Precious memories
How they linger
How they ever flood my soul
Then, the stillness of the midnight
Precious sacred scenes unfold

Precious memories

I offer prayers that your life will be filled with precious memories of warm people, and wonderful places. Thank You God for the people in our lives, some who may only sail by for a moment, but who forever change the river of our life.

First a recognition, and recommendation. Several years ago, I worked with a guy, whose dream was to be a musician, and while most everyone harbors dreams of being a rock and roll star (see American Idol), this guy was different. His name was JJ, but he now goes by Jaystorm. JJ was a good guy, who worked hard at his music and today there was a good article on him in the Knoxville News Sentinel (registration required – really, why do they do that).

From the moment I woke up this morning , I had the song – Standing on the Promises in my head. Getting ready for work, I kept thinking don’t quit, keep going. Work you see has been rather dull lately, and my co-workers have been unkind. I get to work, pop open the Knoxville News website, and their is JJ looking out at me. Keep working indeed.

And work is much easier when you realize that you are standing on the eternal promises of Christ our King!!

Standing on the promises of Christ our King
Through eternal ages let His praises ring
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing, standing.
Standing on the promises of God my Saviour,
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing, standing.
Standing on the promises of God my Saviour,
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Saviour as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

Music has always been an important part of my life.  My kids were amazed at first at my ability to name most any rock/pop tune from the last 20 years within 10 seconds. Now they wonder how I can remember this, but forget to give them lunch money!  I digress.

I grew up in a wonderful church, Mclaurin Heights Baptist Church, with a wonderful Minister of Music, Eric McNair.  Eric brings so much enthusiasm to the music, that it was and is a great blessing to me.

Most all of the hymns, were the “old” hymns.  I like a lot of the contemporary hymns, but the words, and melodies of the old hymns have been burned in, and bring hope, and encouragement in times of trouble.

With this in mind,  Near to the Heart of God, is one of my favorites.

There is a place of quiet rest,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where sin cannot molest,
Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God,
Hold us who wait before Thee
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where we our Savior meet,
Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God,
Hold us who wait before Thee
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of full release,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where all is joy and peace,
Near to the heart of God.

I think the writer of this song, may have been thinking of a place like this.

I travelled to Abingdon this past week to help install some computer equipment. I was excited about the trip, but was apprehensive about the flight segment from Johnson City Tennessee to Charlotte. This segment was on a propeller plane. I have flown a good bit, but have never gotten adjusted to the “puddle jumpers”. Even before I left for Abingdon, this segment from Johnson City was on my mind. Leaving for the airport, I decided that this would need to be a two dramamine trip.

Needless to say, God had different plans for this flight segment. My terror gave way to an incredible peace, and some fantastic pictures. I was reminded of the hymn Trust and Obey:

When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
